What about a Negative Feedback tax system to provide stable economic growth?
While too many politicians try to argue that taxes are simply too high, or too low—–not enough attention is paid to the relationship between long term economic growth vs. the size of the revenue stream.
Lower tax rates generally lead to economic growth.
Higher tax rates provide a bigger stream of funds to the government.
While the government may be tempted to raise rates to try and grab some money, it has an interest in keeping the rate low so that next year there is a bigger GDP to tax.
WHAT IF….
What if when the economy recedes, tax rates become definitively lower. But if the economy grows, tax rates increase.
Generally in a recession, the government needs to stop the economy from shrinking before it can even worry about grabbing money (i.e. this is the argument behind injecting stimulus money—though lower tax rates is generally much more efficient since it definitively delivers money to the successful sectors of the economy and increasing their budgets which enables them to better exploit new business opportunities.
On the other hand, if the economy is growing healthy, there is some possibility of over-hyping and speculating on the "next" stage of growth—this often leads to crashes. By definitively increasing rates at this time, it will have a stabilizing effect (i.e. much like a negative feedback amplifier).
What do you think?
imrickas.. – No..you misunderstood. The Negative feedback system would only raise taxes after economic growth—and as a function of economic growth. In other words the tax rates for next year will be determined by how much the GDP grew. Or by how much it shrank, if that was the case.

Cut taxes, but why would you raise them in a recession? That’s only going to further perpetuate the recession.

It would be a good idea and what Keynes would recommend, but it would not work well if we changed income or payroll taxes unless we also changed the amount withheld from wages also. That is the timing of a stimulus matters at least as much as the amount which is why most economist thinks monetary policy works better. I don’t think people would support the idea because they want to know how much will be in their paycheck.
